Pauline Payens artistic approach combines a calm cheekiness with a sensitivity for both concrete corporeality and the poetic quality of language. With her specific perspective as a former video artist on body-based live art she takes the irreducible relations of body and image seriously, and commits herself to art as an exploration of affects.

dreams in a cloudy space @ Favoriten Festival Mannheim
http://www.favoriten-festival.de/event/dreams-cloudy-space

What attitude do we adopt towards ageing and why does our capitalist-dominated society often define older bodies by their deficits? The poetic performance dreams in a cloudy space interweaves video and sound fragments from retirement homes and senior citizen’s facilities with an encounter between a 35-year-old and a 75-year-old dancer. In doing so, choreographer Antje Velsinger directs our attention away from the supposedly divisive and towards physical qualities beyond efficiency, towards what can be gained by listening to each other.

The First Moment of Marwa El Sherbini, by Noa Gur
An activist video work and performance by Noa Gur, 2019. Performed by Xica Lisboa, Pauline Payen, Daniel Adams, K-ske sugawara, Sebastian Rein, Alexey Trubarov, Irina Demina, Zihern Lee
The piece relates to a hate crime which took place in a German courtroom in 2009: The killing of a young woman, who was murdered with eighteen stab wounds during a trial in which she testified on racist insults directed at her in 2008 by her eventual killer. During the sudden attack, el-Sherbini’s husband pushed himself between the attacker and Marwa to protect her and, as a result, suffered sixteen wounds. He eventually collapsed when a policemen shot his knee, having mistaken him for the killer. These disturbing occurrences pose urgent questions, which remain to a large extent unresolved, as the family’s lawsuit against that Dresden court has been rejected three times.
In this work, the trial that led to the murder is staged through the use of data from police files, and is presented in reverse order in public space.
On the one hand, the piece is an investigation on the questions raised by this incident: namely, how could such a thing occur in the public sphere, in an official building. On the other hand, it is a challenging choreographic task, in which dancers examine the course of events in physical-spatial dimensions while searching for truth. The time axis is reversed and the action is staged backwards to arrive at the beginning of the trial.
Performed on the 1st of July 2019 for the 10 years commemoration in front of teh German Kanzleramt. A10 minutes long performance followed by a short talk by activist prof. Sabine Schiffer.
Performers: Xica Lisboa, Pauline Payen, Daniel Adams, K-ske sugawara, Sebastian Rein, Alexey Trubarov, Irina Demina, Zihern Lee.
Director: Noa Gur
Assistant: Pauline Payen
The project has been supported by Berlin senate research Stipend, Ostrovsky foundation (N.Y, US), Artport Alumni grants and National Lottery Cultural Funds (IL).

Vive l’Optimisme! by Theater ofW @ PAF Festival 2019

A gardening show about the best of all worlds
“Cultivate your garden” is the premise under which Candide DuJardin, inspired by Voltaire, lives and works. Together with a group of artists, he creates a multimedia piece of greenery’.Over the course of a guided garden tour, the audience is taken along on an odyssey who course is uncertain. What would happen if the entrance to the garden were closed? What if the gardener were stripped of their ability to shape the garden? Do we need a new revolution to become the gardener of our own lives again? In a mixture of theater, film, music and installation the different garden patches become an homage to the optimism in the best of all worlds.English with german and french translation.

From Breath to Matter / Kule, Berlin : The Psychedelic Choir
Music band. Seven women. Six vocals + bass. We intonate haunted ambient with witchcraft ritual. Our bass player Leah (NADJA) provides mesmerising sonic foundation with drones and processed sounds.
A stunning orchestra of alien sounds, at times difficult to believe they emanated from human bodies.
The work ebbed and flowed in intensity, ranging from light breath work, to soft rain sounds, to the cacophonous screeches of exotic animals and the razor blade noises of inorganic materials.
What interests Wollny most is “how such actions, when made by a group of people, change the quality of sound from obvious to indefinable: how timbre becomes a dominating factor.”
And, indeed, most sounds were abstracted from their clear referents. Though one might try, the experience becomes less about discerning a recognizable soundscape—a forest, for example—and more about allowing the experience of sound to wash over the body. The audience is prompted to reconsider its relationship to sound, relinquishing the categorical impulse to associate sound with phenomenon, and instead surrendering to the psychosomatic experience of abstract noise.

Fxtrouble initiated the public platform VULVA CLUB with the objective of bolstering and activating a community. VULVA CLUB is a regular event series, an attempt towards peripheral visibility, amplifying underrepresented feminist/queer perspectives. With VULVA CLUB fxtrouble invite guests and fellows to choreograph challenging and experimental encounters of art/works, people, communities and conversations – all through mutual affection in real time.

“We are many bodies and so we can easily multiply. We are young and not as young as you might think. Our ideas do not operate by establishing skeletons, so we expand our bodies into an octopus-like form. Our limbs are many suckers that we use to grasp substratum, catch prey and move from place to place, embracing non-linear locomotion. We chose each other differently than it was asked. We share resources horizontally. We are many vaginas, many phalluses and many rectums, or maybe even more?
How do we choreograph awareness? What is the process of thinking, feeling, sensing, and knowing? What is the embodied knowledge? Where does it arise from and how this knowledge meet other bodies? What leads us to the process of empowerment? How do we empower ourselves and each other in our art making practices?
This encounter investigates different ways of generating knowledge, one that comes out from mutual affection and trust. When we think/say/dance knowledge – we are looking for the one passing through various bodies and mediums, protocols and (hacking) strategies of its own creation. This knowledge is longing for participation/engagement rather than explanation. We come together as a collective, yet we support individuality. We choreograph/shape our limits as waves and we surf them.”
This performative lecture led by Maque Pereyra, Pauline Payen, Vala T. Foltyn was programmed as a panel titled Strategies of Empowerment / The Force of Dance, at Inventur #2 – Contemporary Dance & Performance international conference, May 2017 in Dusseldorf. This time the four artists will meet again and share their practices in the frame of VULVA CLUB in Berlin. The ongoing process of sharing the knowledge among those four artists will shapeshift the current form of this encounter, into which we invite you to witness, feel and experience with us.

She once said to me:
“I often dream of the endless party. The one where everyone gets caught in a trance.
And you wonder if you are the only one who feels like leaving.
You know what I mean?
And the more you feel like leaving, the more it feels like a repetitive torture to stay.
Like… Marguerite with the devil!
Or eating bar-food for dinner.
The sensation of forced containment… to avoid getting kicked out of The Society.
Dancing like chewing gum. And singing like it’s the only thing to do.
There is an idiotic, dark cabaret.
And a cinematographic sliding diva.
A frame around conversations…
A word above the absence of sight.
And elevator music, gently whispering.”

The exhibition explores – through the medium of moving images – the different links that human beings build up with objects in the beginning of the 21th century.
The invited artists question the new realities of the object in times of dematerialized transactions and porous limits between fiction and reality, materiality and virtuality. The artworks aim to symetrically think on how objects influence the definition of our individual and collective identity.

“The majority of gallery visitors are art enthusiasts, casual visitors and vernissage guests – in other words nice-to-have visitors – and collectors and art professionals form only the minority” of the public. (M. Resch, Management of art galleries, 2015)
According to the report of GmbH 2017, more than 70% of the exhibition visitors are less interested in the presented artworks and their concepts or in an exchange with artists than in the probability to meet curators and gallerists that can push their career; not to mention the possibility of getting cheap drinks.
These facts make us, curators, think twice about which artists and works to present in a proper conceptual direction, in order to create a meaningful and coherent group exhibition.
The serious question we might ask now is what makes an exhibition more meaningful than another? According to which criteria should an art show be evaluated? The numbers of visitors? The profit of the sales of drinks at the bar and of artworks? The feedbacks from art critics and audience? The smile on the curators’ faces?
In the group show “keywords_required” we propose to artists, art lovers, collectors and nice-to-have visitors to question what motivations lead the public here and what information they receive. To evaluate the meaningfulness of the exhibition, we selected a list of conceptual keywords that permitted us to set up a sample of artists who are likely to reuse and reinterpret them, to find out if these are transmitted to the public.

INVENTUR 2 wants to analyse the current situation within contemporary dance and performance art, across genre boundaries and in a cross-sectoral manner. 12 years after the first INVENTUR, which took place in Vienna in 2005, the field’s most prominent performers discuss central topics within the latest developments of contemporary dance and art, all the while taking in consideration current political, ecological and economic crises. In 9 panels, both the inventory as well as the inventory-taking itself will be up for discussion.

SHORT DESCRIPTION:
Where do our desires come from? If My Self is multiple, penetrable, desiring and desired, where is the point of resistance? Where and when can I penetrate back? Where and how should I set a limit? And can this limit take the shape of a “We” in a world of “I” ? Can this “We” be more inclusive? And if I+I=We, then who are They?!
We are not what they want I to be. I do not intend to fight against but for. I am not anything we say they want. And so she said.
